I’ve been posting some core convictions I have about various aspects of congregations life. Here’s “pastoral care”:
We are a ‘royal priesthood’. By our baptism, we have been made priests to one another. Pastoral care for each other needs to be the responsibility all of the people in the congregation.
The role of the person in ordered ministry in a congregation is to equip people to take up their pastoral care responsibilities.
Our life together as a community of faith is God’s mission. The church is to be a sign, witness and foretaste of the kind of life and love God intends for all people. People need to see in our lives the kind of community that the risen Christ makes possible.
Pastoral care involves creating a community where trust is possible because we are learning to tell the truth to one another. We dare to tell the truth to each other because we depend on the forgiveness and mercy of God.
